Iran lashes out at EU for dual approach to intl. law

TEHRAN, Apr. 04 (MNA) – The Iranian embassy in London has criticized EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas for citing “international law” as a basis to end Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Kallas said on Thursday night that the Strait of Hormuz “is a global public good. Iran cannot be allowed to charge countries a bounty to let ships pass. International law doesn’t recognize pay-to-pass schemes.” She made the comments after the UK, earlier that day, convened representatives from more than 40 countries to discuss the Strait of Hormuz.

In response to the EU top politician, the Iranian embassy in London shared a post on X Friday, criticizing her selective approach to international law and the EU’s failure to hold the United States and Israel accountable for imposing the ongoing war against Iran.

““International law”? That’s rich. What does it say about US and Israeli regimes military aggression against sovereign states and assassinating their leaders? About the Minab school attack that killed 170 students? Or attacks on civilian infrastructure pharma factories, desalination plants? Funny how “international law” only seems to matter when it fits your narrative. You never hold aggressors accountable, only the victims,” said the embassy.

The US and the Israeli regime launched their joint military aggression against Iran on February 28, following a previous conflict in June last year. Both escalations began while Tehran was engaged in diplomatic talks with Washington over its peaceful nuclear program.

On the first day of the aggression, the Israel regime and the US bombed a schoolgirl in the southern city of Minab, killing 170 students. Over the course of war, the two regimes have also struck other civilian sites, including residential units, and infrastructure such as steel plants and pharma factories.

As part of its response to the aggression, Iran has maintained control of the Strait of Hormuz, allowing passage of ships belonging only to friendly countries. Iran is developing a protocol, in cooperation with Oman, to monitor traffic in the Strait of Hormuz even during peacetime.
